There are 9000 alien (‘alien’ is the international term for ‘exotic’) plants in South Africa – of which only 198 (CARA legislation 2001) are currently listed as invaders and are affected by active legislation – and 348 (in proposed NEMBA legislation 2009) listed invader aliens that are proposed for future legislation.
